Ambition without a goal

Whilst I was looking after my kids full time - I spent a long time trying to understand my own motivations in the past and in the future. This is the phrase I end up with. In my career, I had been constantly trying to be as good as I could be, scanning horizons and trying to do things as well and better than others… but successes didn’t bring much joy. Whilst I have worked to rethink and set my own goals, I now see this phrase as a much bigger reflection of a human drive that is leading the world down so many of the wrong paths.
